Agua pa' la Gente
Hip Hop Hoodios

Political Latin Jewish hip-hop from Beyond the Pale's own Abe Velez. We like to think of Track 3, "Kike on the Mic," as our alternative theme song.

We caught this band live at the Bowery Ballroom and got the bug. This is their CD from 2005; check out Track 11, "La Bush Resistance."

City & Eastern Songs
Jeffrey and Jack Lewis

A bit folky, a bit punky, and very Lower East Side, the lyrics on songs like Track 6, "Anxiety  Attack," and Track 8, "Moving," really strike a chord with us.

A collection from the Israeli pop diva.

Crossing the Blvd
Judith Sloan and Warren Lehrer

A portrait of Queens through voices and music; we're enamored of "Gypsy Dance" on track 5, performed by Sergey Ryabtsev.

Tunes loosely related to Hanukah from Don Byron, the Klezmatics, Jane Siberry, Rebbe Soul, the Masada String Trio, and more. We often play Track 5, "Kiddush Le Shabbat," by The Covenant, and Track 1, "Rock of Ages," sung by Marc Cohn.

Golem

Punk meets klezmer; we caught this band live at the Bowery Ballroom and got hooked.

Gabriel Kahane

It's hard to categorize the fresh ecclectic sound of this singer, composer and pianist, whose music blends pop, jazz and classical forms in surprising and delightful ways.

Mazel Tov Mis Amigos
Juan Calle and His Latin Lantzmen

A re-release of the 1961 recording by Latin and Jazz star Ray Barretto, Willie Rodriguez, Charlie Palmieri, Clark Terry and Doc Cheatham under the fictitious band name, Juan Calle and His Latin Lanztmen. The album magically resounded Jewish standards in Latin time, translating somber, traditional Yiddish and Hebrew melodies into energy-laden Latin rumbas, cha-chas, and meringues.

The Klezmatics

Known as an innovative klezmer band, The Klezmatics go American folk on this CD where they put twelve unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics to music in a tribute to that populist wonderland, Coney Island.

This 3-disc set, created from recordings made by Alan Lomax over a three-day period in 1940, include many of Woody Guthrie's best-loved songs, coupled with his spoken commentary and observations on the hard times of America in the thirties.  We played: Hobo's Lament; Hard Times; Worried Man Blues.

YIP Sings Harburg
Yip Harburg

Legendary lyricist Yip Harburg sings his own compositions on this CD.  We played Brother Can You Spare A Dime probably the most famous song from the Great Depression, on Beyond The Pale, but the CD includes over two-dozen of his works including  Over The Rainbow, Paper Moon and April in Paris.
